Color and Chaos: Inside the Dunkirk Carnival

For more than three months, from January to April, the city of Dunkirk in the northern tip of France hosts its annual Carnaval. Let’s dive into this crazy, festive, and revelrous popular event that is like no other!

A Glimpse into History
The origins of the Dunkirk Carnival date back to the 17th century, a time when local fishermen would set out for months to fish, uncertain of their return. Before embarking on these dangerous voyages, the shipowners would throw grand feasts to celebrate, filled with music, laughter, and a sense of community. Over the years, these festivities gradually evolved into the lively, colorful carnival we know today, with its parades and masquerades.

What Can You Expect?
Tons of balls and walking parades—in which you participate—take place over the weekends all over the city, which is completely transformed and filled with thousands of unrecognizable people under their masks and funky costumes. You'll also encounter an amazingly funny yet talented marching band dressed in striped sweaters and yellow raincoats. Expect a different adventure each night, with new surprises in store.

What Could Your Costume Be Made Of?
Your most unhinged hat, goofy coats, wild makeup, shoes that can handle the unstoppable energy—and anything you own that you deem crazy enough to add to your outfit! Don’t be afraid to look original; that’s exactly what you need to do!

The Wildest and Most Thrilling Gathering
The wildest gathering takes place in front of City Hall, where the parade stops, and the mayor steps out onto the balcony to throw packed herring into the crowd! Catching a herring is like receiving a blessing, so give it your best shot!

Before booking your ticket, make sure you've memorized all the songs so you can join the party. Here’s an example:
Jean Bart, Jean Bart, la voix de la patrie
(Jean Bart, Jean Bart, the voice of the homeland)
Redit ta gloire et ton nom immortel
(Recounts your glory and your immortal name)
Et la cité qui te donna la vie
(And the city that gave you life)
Érigera ta statue en autel
(Will erect your statue as an altar)

Did you find your costume idea to join the party?
